Doris Day has a warm, friendly personality, and those characteristics are reflected in her voice, which is sweet without being cloying. During the course of her long career she has made a great number of songs her own, and many of them are included in this budget compilation, which has been very well remastered. Doris Day had a number of great orchestras backing her, including those of Paul Weston, Percy Faith, Frank DeVol, Buddy Clark, Harry James, Les Brown, and the Norman Luboff Choir, yet none gets a mention. It would also have been helpful to know in what year her hit songs charted, preferably by means of a liner note. Instead of which a gatefold insert has been supplied, with a minimal tracklist, although to be fair those films in which Miss Day sang particular songs are shown, as are the names of duet partners. The lack of more detailed information detracts from what is otherwise a first-class product. I’m also puzzled why Delta has spread “over 160 minutes playing time” (to quote Amazon) across three CDs, given that one will accommodate 80 minutes’ worth. For all of those reasons I’ve held back reluctantly from awarding five stars.
