The cover tracklist of this CD - and this website - credits only the singers, which seems a perverse way to market it, particularly given the quality of the accompaniments. It's true that detail is contained inside, but in miniscule font, and inaccessible until after you've purchased it. The title "Great Songs" is quite specific, and there was no shortage of them in 1939, but some of the selection fail to meet that criterion. Even Peter Dempsey, in his close-knit liner note, is less than enthusiastic about the inclusion of "Three Little Fishies (Itty Bitty Poo)" and with good reason. Many of the songs are presented in alternative versions to those conjured up by the title, but the inclusion of perennial favourites Connie Boswell, Helen Ward, Helen Forrest, Mildred Bailey, Frank Sinatra, and Al Bowlly is welcome. Sound quality is excellent, and whilst this may not be the best compilation for 1939, it's still worth purchasing.
